A place to talk about GPUs/Motherboards/CPUs/Cases/Remotes, etc.

Quietest Mechanical drive?

#1

Post by Fleadh » Tue Sep 13, 2011 11:57 am

Looking to get a quiet mechanical drive to use as a Tvbuffer/recorded tv drive as I dont want to use the SSD for this task. Dont record much TV so size unimportant, just need it to be quiet and cool.

Any suggestions??

2.5" laptop drives are nice and quiet, you can get reasonably quick ones too.

They're relatively expensive once you get up to large sizes though I guess...

Pretty much any newer HDD will run quiet and cool(green ones more so). A 2.5" laptop drive might run a bit quieter and cooler but they the price per GB is much more and a green drive is nearly twice as fast as the a faster laptop drive. With that said since you don't record much a laptop drive might be a great fit your needs but won't give as much room to grow as a similarly priced green drive.

If 500GB is your target, consider this: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... wd5000aads

21 dBA idle, 22 dBA seek.
