How would you wire this up?
Hi
My friend is buying a new AVR and 5.1 speakers he wants to connect his Virgin Cable STB up to the AVR, this is easy connect the Virgin box to the AVR via HDMI and then have the monitor out HDMI from the AVR connect to the TV, this would mean when he watches cable TV the AVR needs to be on and sound would come round the 5.1 speakers.
However what if sometimes you only want the Cable TV sound to come out of the TV inbuilt speakers maybe late at night? How could he wire it up to be able to do both?
Cheers

Does the cable box send multiple outputs concurrently? If so, use HDMI through the receiver and component direct to the tv. Then just swutch inputs.

Maybe I am not sure what connections are on the cable TV STB yet or if it is capable of that.

Check if the AVR has HDMI passthrough on standby option. My Denon 2112ci does. A word of note is this feature does increase standby power drain on the AVR.

That would work also I guess, would probably have to have IR on the splitter box so could be programmed with a Harmony remote I would think you'd need two activities for Watch TV one called Watch TV AVR and one just called Watch TV for regular sound from TV speakers.stonethecrows wrote:Failing that I'd suggest a $30 HDMI switcher and extra HDMI cable from HTPC split to AVR/TV
You'd have to program two activities with an AVR with HDMI pass-through as well one to turn on AVR for cable TV and one to not turn AVR on.

Yes that's how I've read others are doing it. Each activity selecting a different HDMI port on the TV as well (AVR or HTPC direct).

New HDMI Splitter just added to MonoPrice. This should solve the problem.
