I'm not sure what you read, but I am sure you misinterpreted something. The remote controls WMC. WMC then controls the Colossus/HD-PVR. The Colossus/HD-PVR then controls the set top box.

Everything works including the WMC remote. I believe you can have only 1 colossus but not 100% sure.

You can have more than one, at least you can when using the WinTV 7 software to record.
Keep in mind, for those who doesn't know, you can plug a PCIe 1x in any PCIe slot, even a 16x.
My late HTPC (it died a fiery death due to a faulty PSU), had 4 colossus, 2 in 1x slots and 2 in 16x slots.

I had an instructor once who said that everything in electronics works on the "smoke theory". Once you let the smoke out, it stops working!
