Limiting Echo User Rights

#1

How do you take away the "Delete" button from users of the Echo?

How do you allocate a % of storage drive to each Echo user?

It just occured to me that the kids could delete my movies, or fill up the entire hard drive with cartoons.

They only way I have found is by setting the movies you want to keep to "Read Only" on the HTPC. As far as storage space, you can try "Disk Quota". Haven't tried that myself yet, so I don't know if it'll work.

Read only should work, thanks for the tip.

This looks a little complicated, but sounds like it would be effective. http://experts.windows.com/w/experts_wi ... nders.aspx

Well, extender users don't record. WMC records. So I can't imagine a way to allocate space per extender user...

Looks like I posted in the wrong place.

How do I tell WMC that Echo 1 is not allowed to record? or, if Echo 1 is allowed to record, it's only allowed to record a certain amount?

The link that Crash2009 posted in post #4 is the correct way to do it. The reason being that there is a scheduled task that replaces all the file security periodically. So, if you simply set a file to read-only, it won't protect that file permanently... because the scheduled task will reset the file security.

The instructions in that link will prevent an extender user from deleting movies/shows. However, it won't allocate a certain amount of space to that user, and it won't prevent him/her from managing recordings (schedule new ones, stop recordings, manage series recordings, etc).

The only way I found to limit the recordings from kids is to change the settings for their series to keep x episodes. Its not perfect because I have to monitor for any new series they set up. But it does keep the hardrive from filling up with 200 spongebob episodes in a single day (I think spongebob is always on some channel 24 hours a day or at least it seems that way).

It would be cool to limit recording space per extender but I don't think the series even store the value of what user created the series. So even a third party wouldn't not be able to create something like this.
