Headless WMC server

#1

Post by keylimesoda » Sat Dec 15, 2012 2:40 pm

I'm looking to buy the following server as a headless setup for WMC (using Xbox 360 extenders):

HP Proliant ML350
2x Xeon L5335
8GB RAM
3x PCI-E
6x SATA slots
Dual Intel Gigabit
ATI ES1000 (16MB!)
Ceton Infinitv4 (PCI-E)

Should this be able to run WMC with 2-3 extenders on live TV?

I have a similar setup using a headless microserver n40l. Not sure how the processor compares...probably yours is an upgrade? Only thing I did was threw a video card in it so I could pass the digital cable advisor w/o resorting to any tricks. Also I'm using an ssd for the os drive.

Works well although I only run 1 extender at a time. I've looked at the processor and memory though and I think 2 extenders won't be a strain at all... Maybe more who knows. I've seen comments that its mostly about drive speed and memory. I bet 8gb ram is plenty for 2-3 extenders

I'm actually upgrading from a Microserver. I love the hardware--I didn't know it would be beefy enough to run an extender.

Streaming straightforward MPEG2 encoded live or recorded TV to an extender puts very little load on the PC. You do need some additional RAM for Extenders Sessions because each session is an additional user profile logged into your system.

The only time you might see an Extender put a load on the CPU in your PC is if it needs to transcode video.
