Win7 to Win8 Upgrade Question
What happens when you Install Win8 on a Win7 PC? Are all the scheduled recordings, guide settings, extender configs, etc. lost? For example if I have 4 360s acting as extenders does all that have to be re-setup once I update the Win7 box to Win8 (after adding the MC pack)? Or is all of that config (scheduled recordings, guide settings, extenders accts, etc.) still there when the MC pack is added to a Win7 PC that was updated to Win8 and then had the MC pack added?

I'm busting to say this:
folks, it's not Win7 MCE. It hasn't been "MCE" since XP, when Microsoft made a special separate installable build that included Media Center (MC was not available any other way other than installing this build). The called that, "Windows XP Media Center Edition."
But starting with Vista it's just Media Center. Now Windows 7 Media Center. Or 7MC for short.
So stop with the "MCE" already.
There. I feel better.
The answer to your question is, if you upgrade in place everything will be preserved.
But--and I say this with all due respect--(insert voice of John Rhys-Davies here) "you go first."

Where have you seen / heard this? I've seen no info online.
Wish MS just had a direct Win8 upgrade path that included MC - ESP since they are giving it away for free initially.

Mine were lost AND my back-up wouldn't work for series links or channel line-Ups...

Thanks Milli for the update. Yeah - I have not seen anything that agrees with Adam's response.
From the reports I've read ext accts and ehome settings are lost upon installing Win8. I was kind of hoping that upon installing the MC pack everything would be intact. Unfortunate that they do not have a direct upgrade path for MC users - ESP when they are giving it away currently.
Would have been nice if MS laid this out explicitly in the FAQ regarding MC and Win8.

I did the upgrade. If you're upgrading your system, your Windows 7 system folders will get moved to an "old" folder. You will still have access to all the other files as the files are not deleted when you're upgrading. I can still play back any of the WTV files I made before I did the upgrade.
Of course, before I made the upgrade, I imaged the main drive. But another thing in my favor is I have multiple partitions for my system. My recordings are on drive E. So I did have to worry about Windows 8 blowing out the E drive. But I didn't have to worry about it if my recordings were on drive C.
Now, if you upgrade but choose to wipe out the C drive, of course, all your stuff is gone (unless they're on another drive like mine).

Thanks dirtyvu. I was more interested in if you had to re-run MC setup? ie was all your guide data, scheduled recordings, extender accts, etc. lost when you went from Win7 to Win8 + added MC pack?

I did the update and i had to setup extenders and the channel lineups again. I have been running Media center for the past 8 years. Nothing has changed as far as media center but I would highly recommend windows 8 as it is more stable and easier to use for my kids (the actual OS not not media center which stays the same). Been up and running with no issues since Saturday. It took like 2 hours to upgrade but it was worth it for me.

Yeah - I'll probably make the jump once Ceton releases officially supported non-beta Win8 drivers. Surprised they were not ready at launch.

This is good news and one of the reasons I'm waiting to give W8 a try. I was not only worried about my InfiniTV working but my Xbox. But, I plan on a clean install so I wanted to be absolutely sure.Tony2255 wrote:All my extenders are xbox 360 and yes they all work.Perx wrote:Tony did u get your extenders working?
