exhaust fans are bloomin' noisy!

A place to talk about GPUs/Motherboards/CPUs/Cases/Remotes, etc.

exhaust fans are bloomin' noisy!

Driving me up the wall, so I've just disconnected them. Silence is golden!

Question is, should I leave them off? The CPU fan (which I thought was the culprit, but is dead quiet) blows straight out through the exhaust fan anyway.

With all fans connected the system runs less than 40c (usually about 26c-33c). So far I've not noticed an increase.

Have you checked the bios for a fan speed adjustment http://techreport.com/discussions.x/16686

The case fans might need to be replaced with a type supported by the motherboard. Check to see if the case fans support "speed sensor". http://us.msi.com/service/download/manual-18189.html Page 33

Yes, it is enabled but never makes any difference. And I think I know why - it references sysfan1 & 2 and the actual fans are connected to sysfan3 & 4. When I built it I connected them to the nearest and most easily accessible mobo sockets. I would just change that, but it involves removing a lot of parts which are very tightly positioned. Drive cages and suchlike.

I can't see anything in the manual regarding the fans supporting speed sensor. Not surprising - they're the ones which came with the case, and the case has been around for a while now.

Looks like I'm going shopping.

Since I posted earlier, I have run a stress test on the cpu, and the temp didn't rise above 50c. Not bad with no case fans. I can't bring myself to reconnect the fans just yet!

If your motherboard doesn't support adjusting the fan speed, consider a Zalman Fan Mate 2.

The new fans should help somewhat, really quiet 80mm fans are extremely difficult to find. Noise also depends on your case, some just have noisy airflow, in my experience aluminium cases in particular.

You never really know how much you'll hear fans when the lid is on and the HTPC is installed in position so my advice is to fit a rheostat (fanmate or similar) with a way of adjusting the fans speed externally. You can trim the speed to just under audible. Keep an eye on internal temps for a while.

Your MC just might need a good blow out. Your fan(s) should speed up if dust is preventing good air flow.

Lol! There's not a lot of dust in there - it's still quite new.

The system is definitely running warmer than usual, with the fans disconnected, but still well within tolerance. Somewhere in the mid 40's . I'm happy with that until the new fans arrive. They should be controlled by the mobo, unlike these current ones.

It's not just the system temp, exhaust fans also help with temp for drives, video cards, main board, etc. if the case comes with a fan, I wouldn't switch it off - its there for a purpose.

The new fans are in now, and they're damn near silent. I can't recommend them highly enough. Coolink SWiF2-800.

It does run warmer than before. Either the fans aren't as good as the noisy ones, or it might be the smart cpu fan control. The lowest target temp I could set is 40c, and it hovers round that mark.

What CFM do your new fans push through and if you still have the old fans look up the type if you can and compare.

If your CPU hovers around 40C, what's the problem? According to the specifications for your CPU, the max temp is 72.6C. You really don't need to run it at room temperature.

40C is just fine, worry only if of it's constantly around 65C, anything under that will be fine
