8MC Fantasy Thread

#1

Post by Pixelz » Tue May 08, 2012 3:01 pm

Since it seems the version of WMC to be delivered with Windows 8 will have little or no enhancements over 7MC, I got a bit nostalgic. I started to fantasize aout what might have been, and what functionality I would have paid for in 8MC. Here's my list in no special order-- what do you think I missed?

1. A supported extender platform on entry-level hardware as well as XBOX 360 (or even SoftSled)
2. Picture-in-Picture
3. MKV and HD-Audio codecs
4. A Weather App
5. A Stock-Ticker App
6. An Email-Client App
7. An Instant Messaging App
8. Telephony support with Caller-Id
9. LE-AAC transcoding to AC3 (for UK HDTV surround sound)
10. MHEG5-IC extensions (for UK interactive HDTV channels 110-117)
11. An API that supports Metro Apps as well as MCML and XAML
12. Alternative sources for EPG data
13. Alternative sources for Movie Artwork
14. Menu Options to backup the scheduled recordings database
15. Recording multiple program streams from a single tuner
16. Blu-Ray playback

Lol, reminds me of the days when we actually thought we had input into Media Center... when Windows 7 was our idea...

Internet streaming:
- Renewed netflix commitment to Media Center, fixing the end-of-video freeze
- Hulu, Hulu plus integration
- Easy way to search for other internet streaming sources

-fixing the spinning circle on startup bug

Otherwise, I think I'm pretty happy

An improved guide would be great.

Other then that, I think a big improvement would be a better platform for third party apps. Its just so anemic right now. MS is all about streaming media, so MC should be at the forefront of that, offering 3rd party app devs an easier way to get in there. Everything from netflix or amazon prime support would be awesome. My goal is one interface to access all of my streaming and local content from my couch and so far none can do that.

Other then those two, I'm not really missing anything. I use MB, so that handles all of my movie and tv watching. I like the MC music and picture interfaces, so I use those heavily. I also use the video section for things like music videos. It would be nice if they added video playlist support.

Watch MS surprise everyone--including Ceton--by bringing out an XBox SKU with a big hard drive and an all-new media platform, including recording TV.

Of course, somehow they'll try to leverage the whole XBox Live subscription model to try to turn it into another Tivo, and they'll screw it all up and lose their shirts.

According to Barnabas' posts, that is an issue specific to the InfiniTV. He says it doesn't occur with the HDHRP, and I didn't ever have this problem before installing the InfiniTV.

Partially true - the spinning circle didn't show up until recently - Never saw it before in the 1.5 years I have had the InfiniTV until sometime recently.

I always see it on startup of MC, about 5 seconds after the 10 foot interface appears. It lasts about 6-10 seconds, then occasionally I see it for a few seconds changing channels.

I think Mike may be correct. I didn't see the spinning circle when I first installed the Ceton either. But I can't say that it started "recently". It started a long time ago for me. Now that I'm using an HDHRP, no more spinning circle! Yea!

What is all this talk about no changes in Windows 8 media center, i mean "HELLO":

It is strange though why they even bothered to add this at all.
