My wife has an HTPC from HP and has had it for a while. it came with a Hauppauge digital/analog tuner. We have a Ceton PCIe on order. I have alot of questions about what I'll need to do for setup.
Will we be able to use all 6 tuners? (4 from the Ceton and 2 from the Hauppauge)
What kind of performance hit should we expect to that system. EQ2 and Portal 2 are the most strenuous things she uses the system for, and currently has no issues with it.
Will she be able to share any of the tuners with my PC? How does that impact performance both system and network wise?
HTPC: system specs:
proc: intell C2 Q6600
4GB RAM
640 GB HD (gonna be adding a 1TB+ drive as needed)
10/100 Ethernet
802.11n 150 wireless.
I guess the rest of my questions will depend on the answers to these.

Just by adding 4 more tuners? That only changes how many streams you can record at once. The more streams you record at once, the more it impacts the HDD throughput that is available for other applications.DaemosDaen wrote:What kind of performance hit should we expect to that system
Yes (the InfiniTV tuners), but they can only be statically shared....meaning if she shares a tuner with your PC, that tuner cannot be configured for use with her system.DaemosDaen wrote:Will she be able to share any of the tuners with my PC?
System performance is the same for a networked tuner and a local tuner for everything except the network interface. Well, the Ceton came in yesterday and WMC sees all 4 tuners, but when I get it going, it starts to warn me about a temp issue after I get all 4 tuners going. I did not know the operating temp of the card when I installed it. I've got a fan on it now, but it still gets too warm., artly because there's no real airflow coming in from outside. I might have to get a drill and make some holes for the fan, or a dremmel.

Your PC case doesn't have any fans that pull air from outside? That's strange. You shouldn't need to drill any holes... just add fans in the spots where your PC is designed to have case fans. They don't necessarily have to blow directly on the Ceton card... but in some cases you will need an extra fan inside the case that blows on the card.
Before drilling holes, just try adding some intake and exhaust fans to the case. You usually want an intake fan/s on the front of the case, and exhaust fan/s on the rear of the case. If your case stands vertically, you want the intake fan to be lower than the exhaust fan in most situations (heat rises and needs to be exhausted out of the case).

Unfortunately I can't find any intake fans. I have an exhaust fan right next to the Ceton I've got 4 tuners going and it's very slowly rising.
It does not help that it's almost 90 degrees F in this house

It's an HP M8430f.
It's got an Nvidia 430
the PCIe analog/digital tuner that comes with it
and the new Ceton.
I have removed the PCI dialup modem and currently have an exhaust fan there. (I wish it was an intake fan)

There are days... the temps were fairly high till yesterday, and we did spend most of the time out of the house. (most of my posting is from work) It should be cooler today. My case does not have any airflow issues. but then it's not a pre-built pos. I'm gonna test it today.

OK... I can't find any detailed pictures of the inside of the case. It's definitely pre-built. I'm not sure if it's a POS. Doesn't that case have a location to mount a fan near the front (usually near where the HDD's are mounted)???

I can't find any, the HD is sandwiched between the external drive dock and the front AV panel. there is an empty drive bay. I'll throw up some pics tomorrow morning.

If you pull the plastic front off of the case, you should see some small holes arranged in the shape of a fan with four screw holes for mounting. You will usually need to remove the drive bay to mount the fan and then will need to put the drive bay back in after mounting the fan. The drives may need to be re-positioned in order for everything to fit. Sometimes you can mount a drive so that it is sticking out of the drive bay an inch or so to make room for the fan.

I have the same MB as you in a HP a6528p w/ a E2200 pentium processor. I have a only the Ceton and a gigabit card taking slots and added a 1TB drive to the stock 500GB unit. I added a muffin fan in the rear of the case which blows inward. My temps were not that bad but, I prefer to keep things cool. Just checked, Ceton is at 48 degrees C at idle.

Well, the house cooled off this weekend and it's settled down to 54.9 with all 6 tuners going. I'm still going to work at it, but it's not as dire. unfortunately I had other emergencies this that took precedence. I will let you know how it goes
