If we previously used the "installer" version... what would happen if we extracted the files from the "portable" version and overwrote our existing ones?

It will still work. You just won't be updating the notification tray or the proxy/image cache service if you do that. So the webstats page will always show the version of when the installer was used.

I think the only thing that might not work correctly (or maybe just initially) is remembering GUI settings such as size, location, sorting... stuff like that. I'd have to run a test to find out.

On the technical side, epg123 will look for the existence of the service (epg123Server.exe) in the same folder. If it exists, then it will write token information to the registry for use by the service and all the program images will be pointing to the service. If it does not exist, then it will not read/write to and from the registry and all the program images will point to the SD server.
