Server and forum upgrades - July 2020

#1

Post by holidayboy » Wed Jul 15, 2020 8:36 am

Hi all,

After talking to our current hosts, a few upgrades are required in order to (hopefully) keep the site working well. :|

We're running on a server OS that is nearing end of support and there is also a newer version of phpbb that we'd benefit from as well.

It means that I'll have to take a full server backup so that the VPS server can be re-imaged.

I'll need to put the forums into read-only mode at some point over the coming days so that the upgrades can go ahead.

I'll try to keep you updated during the upgrades - I may have to set up a temporary webpage depending on the amount of time it all takes...

The hosts state that the re-image may take up to 72 hours from the time it is requested (but normally within 24 hours).

At that point I'll have to restore our backup and then work on upgrading the forum software itself.

I'll post again once we set a solid date for when the forums will be put into read-only mode.

Hi all,

the forums will be taken offline on Wednesday 22nd of July at 8AM UK time for the server upgrade.

We'll get back up and running ASAP once the hosts have upgraded our VPS.

We'll be carrying out the phpbb forum software upgrade at a later time.

Hi folks - change of plan....

Our hosts are evidently having serious issues - I have been unable to get a full server backup to complete successfully - so we are unable to re-image it today!

I think the best course of action is to stay as we are for now and we'll look at possibly moving to an alternative host (again) over the coming weeks.

Bluehost have been a fairly good host for us but the recent issues are a cause for concern. I'm hoping to get some concrete information on what the actual issues are.

Feel free to chip in with any suggestions for a VPS host!

We'll post back as soon as we have more details.

As you probably already know, we had another big outage today.

We're currently setting up a new home with a different hosting company.

We'll post back once we're ready to make the switch - there will be some disruption while we transition over but probably not much worse that we've been seeing lately anyway.

Hi all,

sorry for the short notice but it looks like today is moving day.

I'll be putting the forums into read only mode shortly and then getting us set up on the new server.

I'll post back here once we're up and running there - there will obviously be dns changes involved so at some point you will get directed to our new server Ip address rather than here and will have normal access to the forums at that point...... if all goes well.

I'm uncertain how long the move will take - in large part due to the current issues with our host here - getting a full files and database backup that is 100% up to date may take a couple of tries.

Due to the issues with our hosts, read only access is proving difficult to enable...

Please do not post in the forums - any posts made here may be lost during the move.

If any do slip through then I'll do my best to move them over manually.
