Yes, a symlink takes up very little space in the filesystem, but WMC may not see the symlink and instead see the linked file and consider that as being the size of the file in that filesystem.

I doubt that WMC uses free space on the filesystem to determine if there is space available since you can limit the amount of space that WMC uses for recordings (you can have 2TB of free space in the filesystem, but if you tell WMC to only use 20GB max for recordings, and it has already recorded that much, it will report that there is not enough space to record more). The WMC GUI only allows to to set the max space to use to the size of the target hard drive.

To test this, you would have to set the max size to a low value (not sure how low it can be) and record some shows until the size of them is just under the max value. Then move those recordings to the archive disk and then create the symlinks. Then try to record a new show and see if it gives you the error about not enough disk space.
