Disagree.

Media Center is working as well as it ever did. In fact better, as a result of community projects. I don’t see why it can’t live on until traditional broadcast TV is completely replaced By streaming.
I think we're in violent agreement here.

I'm not saying it doesn't work; absolutely, it works great.

For that matter, so does the USR Courier HST DS 56.6 modem that's sitting on my shelf. It's the best piece of computer hardware.

WMC will live until broadcast TV, as WMC can use it, is gone. That's not very far away.

The value, the ROI, of tinkering is low in the current and ongoing environment.

Could you zip up the epg123.mxf file and send it to me at support@garyan2.net? For that entry, all I am doing it taking the raw data from Schedules Direct and stripping off the 'Z' at the end. I'm not even converting the string to a date and then back to a string.
There were 3 stations exhibiting this problem: QVC, HSN, and HSN HD. I let @rkulagow know what I saw, he cleared the cache, I checked it out, and everything is fine now. Bada Bing, Bada Bang, Bada Boom.

I see the same error with EPG123 1.3.6.20 when importing the MXF. Is this error coming from the loadMXF.exe program, or some pre-proceesing that you are doing in the client? That error message seems too "clean" to be from a Microsoft written program (unless you're post-processing the error message). Could you massage improperly formatted values like this so they are valid? I'm assuming the seconds aren't important here, so can always be set to 00. Probably a good idea to still log an error if you find and correct this problem so that SchedulesDirect can be informed.

The error is coming from loadmxf.exe program. I'm not doing anything with it other than logging it.

Why would I massage this? According to the SD API documentation (shown below), the datetime format is very specific and I'm going to hold them to it. There is no reason for me to anticipate and correct/hide errors in the data provided. If I get an invalid datetime format, how would I know what is wrong with it? What if it is the hour missing, or the minutes? As far as I am concerned, if the data is not in the proper format, then it is completely invalid even if it mostly right.

Code: Select all

airDateTime - 20 characters. Mandatory. "2014-10-03T00:00:00Z". This will always be in "Z" time; your grabber must make any adjustments to localtime if it does not natively work in "Z" time internally.
Just a note: The fact that by SD clearing their cache and rebuilding fixed the issue leads me to believe the problem originated from their upstream provider Gracenote.

When you got your error, was this after I said it was fixed, or before? If after, then there must be some more stations out there with invalid times.

The dates in the log are in EDT, so I believe it was before it was fixed. I haven't been able to run it again due to ongoing recordings which should be over in about 30 minutes.

EDIT: I just posted this at ~11:13pm EDT and the post says it was posted at 10:55pm, so something is screwy with the clock on the forum.

My two cents worth ...

I agree that most folks still using WMC have certainly, at some point, been "tinkerers". e.g. I've been "tinkering" with computers since I was a 15-yr old college freshman in 1963; and have had PC's and networks at home for over 45 years ... most of which I built myself (in later years that more of an assembly process; but in the 70's it involved a lot of soldering).

However, I'm long past most of the tinkering -- I've written hundreds of thousands of lines of code, but virtually none in the last decade. And I've done a lot of hardware mods along the way, but again, none in nearly two decades.

As for epg123 => I love it. My "DVR" is a Windows 7 box with 10TB of storage and a network interface to a server with over 50TB of storage. Three 3-tuner cable card tuners (HD Homeruns), so I can record 9 channels at once and have space for thousands of hours of recordings. The main HTPC drives a 60" TV in our family room; three XBox 360 extenders on my home network drive TVs in the Master Bedroom, a spare bedroom, and an extra "man cave" where I watch sports, etc.

EPG123 allows this setup to keep on working perfectly with WMC, which I plan to use until the content is no longer available via the cable company (which, I agree, may not be all that many more years). But I have (a) NO desire to tinker with EPG (it already works perfectly); and (b) absolutely no need for the "Get Latest Guide Listings" choice in WMC to work --- EPG updates every night via the scheduled task and that's plenty good for me. If it ever fails, the little green icon simply changes color to let me know that -- and in fact I basically ignore it if it's yellow (happens rarely) or red (has only happened once) => my experience in recent months is that it changes back to green within a day (usually) or two (it was yellow once for 2 days in a row). If that didn't happen, I'd look at the log and see what's going on (I did that a good bit when I first switched to it; but once I decided it was plenty reliable I don't even bother with that anymore).

As for WMC -- with the EPG guide I do not agree it's "dead and on a ventilator". As long as the underlying hardware works well, it'll work just fine for as long as there is content available for it. And I think it'll be some time before cable is totally overcome by streaming services -- although I agree that will likely be the case sometime during this decade. Even then WMC will work just fine for playing all of the content we've already got recorded.

I just hope Gary keeps EPG123 working as well as it does now. I've donated a couple times and plan to do so annually to help ensure Gary stays motivated :D :D

There is no difference in the garbage collection between 1.3.9.10 and 1.3.9.30. Everything imported just fine, so maybe next time the garbage collection will run okay. It should run again on next update since it failed this run.

The error repeated again this morning, so I did a database rebuild. Then I let it run an update again and it successfully completed the garbage cleanup.

Make that for Win10 only. I don't know why, but my VM didn't download all the Win7 updates until today. The [Get Latest Guide Listings] button will only work for Win10 unless the Win7/Win8 machine has not been updated since 08/2019. Security updates are fine, just not the other updates.

That at least makes more sense. I guess the Win 10 installer is using older files.

Yah, kind of a bummer, but it still works great under the right conditions. No harm if the feature can't be used with updated Win7/8 versions. I do however have this coming soon.

I stopped doing updates quite a bit before Win7 disappeared into eternity. I just checked and my last regular update was 9/2019 but I did avoid an update or two prior to that that was supposed to put up a warning that Win7 was ending and who knows what else. I never did get any warnings that others got. That might be why the GLGL button finally worked for me. Although you do have me thinking why I couldn't run the task with the Network group, instead only Administrators would work. Anyway, I haven't touched the GLGL button since I finally got it working. It's simply not something that I was really interested in. EPG123 does its thing once a day in the background and that's happiness in itself. I don't feel the urge to interact with it manually as long as it continues to work perfectly on its own.

The System Tray doesn’t work so well for a full time HTPC which runs full screen Media Center 24/7. I would need to minimise/close Media Center to see this. I can close Media Center from my remote and also relaunch it. However a hover or right-click means breaking out the keyboard/mouse, at which point I would probably be diving into the apps and logs anyway.

Well aware of that. I'm just trying to provide another method a user can verify their EPG status. There is no single option that will cover everybody's use-case.

HI:

I had an issue about a month ago where WMC just disappeard my guide. Popped up an error box saying "You need to Setup the Guide again..." or similar...

Your instructions to rollback the EPGInstance in the registry immediately did the trick and fixed me up.

Perhaps this is just one big coincidence but things were working fine for a month until I went back into the EPG123 client to play with Tweak WMC.

After playing with Tweak WMC, the next time I loaded Mediacenter, the guide was gone. Like I said, probably a coincidence... but curious.

Perhaps it's unrelated, but Tweak WMC is crashing on me. Ran the client, entered Tweak, checked 'Center Logos', clicked Update, pooof.

A little while later, tried to run Media Center and guide was gone.

Looks like an error condition wasn't handled gracefully. All this happened after an unusually long processing session because lots of recording were going on.

The 10:10 PM entry occurred exactly when I ran MediaCenter and it threw the Guide doesn't exist error.

Hope this helps track the issue down...

Thanks,
Dave
