Undelete Scanned Channels

#1

Post by Space » Sun Aug 21, 2022 9:25 pm

I noticed that a new network was added to my lineup, but it was not showing up in the WMC guide (it should have been channel 612).

I checked the EPG123 config GUI and it was listed there and had a check mark.

I then checked the EPG123 Client and it was not listed in the left side panel, but was in the right side panel.

When I attempted to link the channel on the right and left side, I noticed that the channel number was missing from the left side all together.

I pressed the "Undelete Scanned Channels" button and not only saw this channel, but saw it also listed 14 other channels.

I was able to "undelete" them all and link the guide listings to the one channel that I had initially noticed was missing.

I also noticed the following in the EPG123 log (all lines found that were referencing channel 612):

Code: Select all

[8/2/2022 12:09:03 AM] [ INFO] Channel 612 BNC was removed from lineup EPG123 Verizon Fios Freehold - Digital (Freehold).
[8/13/2022 7:51:00 PM] [ INFO] Channel 612 GRIOTV was removed from lineup EPG123 Verizon Fios Freehold - Digital (Freehold).
[8/21/2022 4:11:06 PM] [ INFO] Matching GRIOHD to channel 612
I am guessing that back on 8/2, when the channel was removed from the lineup (with a different network association), it also deleted the channel from WMC. Or perhaps it was on 8/13? I'm not sure why it was saying that GRIOTV was removed, as this is the new network.

It also appears that EPG123 tried to match the new network GRIOHD to the channel, but it failed (apparently due to the channel having been deleted).

Since I only use a CableCard device, I would not think that channels would be deleted since when EPG123 is first set up, it adds 9999 channels even if they are not assigned to a network listing. I assumed that having all 9999 channels available was required so that EPG123 could assign listings to them in the future.

So I guess my questions are:
  • Is it normal behavior for channels to be deleted from WMC like this (rather than just having the listings removed and the channel disabled when the channel is no longer in the lineup)?
  • If it is normal, is it possible to have EPG123 add the channel back when it notices that it has new listings and a network that should be assigned to that "missing" channel?
For a CableCard device, I would think it would be simple to add the channel, as there is no scanning needed (as it is not necessary for WMC to determine any frequency information for CableCard channels). Also, since you have the option to "Undelete Scanned Channels", I assume EPG123 somehow retains information about these deleted channels, so it should also be able to automatically restore them for non-CableCard channels when it sees that there are new listings in the lineup for that channel (although I assume the frequency info could have changed, so this may not be a workable solution).

Looks like another channel was removed from the lineup on Schedules Direct and it resulted in the channel being deleted on WMC.

Is this normal behavior?

It would be preferable if the listings was just removed from the channel and auto-match would then disable the channel (rather than delete it).

It actually might be good to delete it, but only if it would be added back again when there was a listing assigned to the channel again in Schedules Direct. I've seen that this does not appear to happen (at least in one instance) but I don't know if that is normal behavior or not...

The preferred way is actually the way it is supposed to work. Older versions of epg123 certainly did it this way, but I was basically doing a brute force copy of what WMC is supposed to do. When I did some massive code changes and reorganizations, I started using the built-in methods provided by WMC to subscribe listings to a merged channel. EPG123 actually no longer unsubscribes listings from merged channels so this issue is an artifact from WMC. The strange thing is, I haven't been able to duplicate it so I can find a way to make it right. I don't know if that is because of the way OTA listings are subscribed or something else.

I'm actually thinking it is not an unsubscribe problem, but a subscribe problem. I'll see what I can do to try and duplicate it, but I haven't been very successful so far.

The merged channel with guide listings will have the guide listings as the Primary channel and the tuner/scanned channel as the Secondary channel. When the guide listings disappear from the lineup, the Secondary channel is supposed to move up into the Primary spot so you will have the channel in the guide without listings. What is happening in your case is when the guide listings disappear, the channel gets orphaned to have an empty Primary channel and possibly lose the tuner/scanned channel as well. Not sure why that is happening.

I'm not sure what you mean by OTA listings but it seems like you are referring to a lineup that lists my local OTA stations. I don't have one (at least that shows up in the EPG123 client). The only listings I have are for my Verizon FiOS service. If I look in the EPG123 client, I only have two Imported Lineups & Services listed in the drop-down menu, the FiOS one and the Dummy one.

Gary,

This isn't directly related to the problem in OP, but I figured it was similar, so decided to post it here instead of a new thread...

This is with version 1.7.1.12.

It looks like my lineup has had some changes over the past 4 days. You can see from the logs below (I just extracted the "Matching" and "removed" lines from the trace.log and put a blank line between each separate client run), that there were some channels added to the lineup and a channel was removed, however the same channels seem to show up every day, and the matching and removal does not actually occur:

[10/4/2022 8:04:53 PM] [ INFO] Channel 113 FOXWXSD was removed from lineup EPG123 Verizon Fios Freehold - Digital (Freehold).
All log entries above were from the daily run that happens automatically except for the last one, in the final run here, I had unchecked channels 81, 91, and 113 from the EPG123 Configuration GUI and then manually triggered an update/import through the systray icon. After I did that, the channel matching worked for the remaining channels, 591 and 613, and the other channels were removed from the lineup on the client (channel 591 had it's guide data changed from OLYHD to VZ10, not sure if this is considered a change or a separate delete and add.)

Do you have any idea why the matching and removal did not work here? Before I did the final run, I checked the client and there was no other guide data associated with the "Matching" channels, and they were disabled, not deleted like in the problem described in the OP post of this thread.

For the next release (whenever I get my new code signing certificate), that routine has been completely rewritten to hopefully correct what you are seeing there as well as automatically "undelete" channels that are removed from the guide when a station it is mapped to is removed from the lineup.

In simple words, I think the automatch routine is broken but hopefully fixed in the next release.

When I was doing some rewrites, I did find some cases where the new code may still have problems with tuner channels that have been combined/merged together and then split apart. I haven't found a good way to handle that yet but I will work on that after I actually get this release out.

Sounds good!

I only have the one lineup, so I assume no merged or split channels should exist in my system.

I think I remember that WMC would install two lineups (the one you selected as well as the OTA lineup for you area) even if you didn't have any OTA tuner attached. That is not what my system has currently, it only seems to have the one FiOS lineup.

What I mean by merged channels, I mean multiple tuner channels combined into one like below.
combinedChannels.png
combinedChannels.png (2.97 KiB) Viewed 901 times
I have the same station on 2 different OTA frequencies so I combined them into the same merged channel.

Seems like there may be an issue with merged channels... I've included the pertinent lines from the past 3 days below (first day is to show there was no problem on that day, but then problem occurred on next two days). This is with version 1.7.1.13.

There must be yet another mergedChannel flag I need to pay attention to. Could you send me a backup of your database so I can find what is different here?

Are channels 610, 658, 1508, 1536, 1585, 1662, 1680, or 1691 viewable in the guide?

610 - Disabled in guide. Channel is no longer working.
658 - Not disabled in guide, but indicates there is no guide data. Channel actually still exists and works (has programming).
1508 - Disabled in guide. Channel is unsubscribed in my package (but still exists).
1536 - Disable in guide. Channel is unsubscribed in my package (but still exists).
1585 - Disable in guide. Channel is unsubscribed in my package (but still exists).
1662 - Disable in guide. Channel is unsubscribed in my package (but still exists).
1680 - Disable in guide. Channel is unsubscribed in my package (but still exists).
1691- Disable in guide. Channel is unsubscribed in my package (but still exists).

Now that I look again, I see that both 610 and 658 seem to be back in the lineup (colored pink) in the EPG123 config GUI, however 610 does not actually have anything being broadcast on it, but 658 does.

All the others (1500+) channels are all active channels (and are colored pink in the EPG123 GUI, so must be new channels or were old channels that were removed and then added back like the 600+ ones), and still exist in the lineup from SD, it's just that I don't subscribe to them as they are not a part of my cable package. I will uncheck these and do an update later when there are no recordings in progress...

Note that none of these channels have other channels in the guide with the same stationID.

I will send you the lineup backup (I assume this is the one you want).

EDIT: Just sent you a zip of all three backup files.

Well, not surprisingly, everything seems fine here. I wonder if the backup "cleans" everything. The strange thing is those merged channel IDs and tuner channel IDs as part of what you posted above don't exist in the backup you sent me. I restored your backup on my machine and performed an automatch without a problem, and a second run was clean.

Not sure why it is removing "658: GEM" from the lineup when I didn't uncheck 658 or 610. Also it says GEM instead of GEMHD for some reason.
You can see below that it then tries to map GEMHD, so apparently it didn't remove it from the lineup.

GEM and GEMHD are 2 different stations. I suspect your provider had GEM on 658 in SD and replaced it with GEMHD in HD, but there is something about the merged channel that isn't right. What is strange is GEM doesn't exist in the backup you sent me either so it looks like it is only partially removed from your database. When was the last time you ran your garbage collection?

As another experiment, you could delete channel 658 in the client and then undelete it. It will actually create a new tuner channel and will probably clean that up.

As I've indicated in the past, I run garbage collection every 5 days, but it doesn't seem to clear out all the old data, although I'm not sure what it does and doesn't clear...

If I look at the channel guide data in Remote Potato, it does seem to have cleared some data, but I still have data going back to the beginning of October for shows I don't record (and even further back for shows I do record).

I deleted and undeleted both 610 and 658 and here is the log after running another update:

Code: Select all

[10/29/2022 1:58:27 AM] [ INFO] Completed lineup refresh.
So no more "Mapping" log entries, but it still feels the need to tell me about the removal of those other channels even though the 1500+ ones are already removed, and 658 is not removed (and is still not removed after this update).

I totally forgot about your Remote Potato/Garbage Cleanup issue. 658 GEM was replaced with 658 GEMHD, so technically the 658 being shown in the log was removed (partially?). It doesn't show in the backup you sent me.

Just to follow up, today's daily update showed no log messages regarding any of this. So I guess it is, um... fixed? :) Oh well...

I have the same problem: within 2 days I lost all activated/subscribes channels; this happens constantly; most of the time only some channels are gone;
I have a satellite setup;

It looks like there are a lot of changes to your lineup coming from the SD upstream provider, but I would suggest when using satellite to not use the automatch feature. The automatch feature is dependent on the channel numbers between your tuners and the provided lineup and the channel numbers assigned to scanned satellite transponders is not predictable.

I'm always matching manually, which is the main part of the problem when I have to restore the EPG; 50+ channels on 2 PCs (server and client) a lot of work....
That's why I requested elsewhere the option to export the matching (which does not comply with numbers or names) to a file which could be then imported...

who is deleting (and for what reason) the channels? EPG123 or Media Center?
