Running install.reg does not work

#1

Post by RogerE » Tue Jun 06, 2023 11:41 am

Hi

I am new to the Green Button Community and so apologies if this question has already been covered but I could not see it.

I am trying to install this on to a computer which has previously had WMC running. I have tried to uninstall, reboot and re-start a few times but have found that on clicking on the shortcut it did nothing except appear in app list for a few secs and send a report. I have done some more digging in to the install log file and see that it is failing to successfully run the Install.reg line i.e. in the log file it says:

C:\WINDOWS\System32\reg.exe import "C:\Program Files\Windows Media Center\Install.reg"
ERROR: Error accessing the registry

If I then try to run the import manually using reg.exe I get (as attached) which states that some of the keys are open by the system / other processes or insufficient privileges to perform. I have tried to run as administrator too.

Any help would be greatly appreciated as I am really keen to get the WMC up and running again... my family love the photo display where it pans and zooms on individual pictures... great for a slide show.

Thanks

Roger

When I run into this issue I use Process Explorer (link) to search for the offending process.

In your case you need to open the "install.reg" file in Notepad and see what key(s) it's trying to import and then perform a search in Process Explorer. That should point you to the offending process and then you can kill it and then try the import again.

Hi, thanks for this.

I downloaded Process Explorer but there are so few processes running - none of which seemed relevant.

What I have done is gone through the Install.reg file and split it out in to increasingly smaller chunks to work out where the issues were (and registered all the lines which have worked).

The following are the failing lines. I have 1 Error accessing the registry the others I expect are down to supposed insufficient privileges.

Of course this may not be the cause / reason why the application is not working.

Any further / different thoughts?

Thanks

You mention "few processes" so you probably need to go to "File -> Show Details for All Processes" in order to actually see every process running on your system.

Did you perform a search for any of the reg keys in Process Explorer? That's how you'll find the offending process, even if you think a given process is irrelevant.

For the following line I would search for "Media Center" or "Recording" (or whatever you deem appropriate) in Process Explorer and it should point you to the process that has that key open. Do the same for the other lines.
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Media Center\Service\Recording\Restricted]
"ccc"=hex:48,E7,0E,92,58,B3,13,E6,AE,F1,D5...
In some cases I've found that a single process can have multiple affected keys open.

NOTE: The results are easier to see if the "Lower Pane" is visible using Ctrl-L or the view menu.

You won't be able to manually import those registries (not easily anyway). If you look at the install.log file, you may find some failures using SetACL.exe for some registry keys. These need to be accessed/installed with Trusted Installer credentials and ownership. Not even Administrator can do anything with them.

You said you had WMC running on it before? What version? If a version from the MDL community, then you need to run the uninstaller from whatever was installed before prior to installing 8.9.1 to clean all the old stuff out.
