Finally too the plung and moved to W10. Installation was pretty straightforward using the msi, so thanks for that Gary! The last thing to do is transfer my recordings across, but I'm getting an error:

Any ideas? I did notice the recording file is quite small at 337kb

What are you trying to do?

The transfer tool doesn't transfer recordings, it converts/transfers Series recording requests.

So, the problem occurs when trying to open the backup file generated on the old W8.1 machine on W10.

The steps I've followed are:
Create Backup file on W8.1 machine
Click on Transfer Tool on W10
Navigate to Backup file and double click

I've run a test Backup on W10 using a dummy recording request and that seems to resore without any problems.

Then windows version shouldn't matter. Send me your backup zip file and I'll find out where it is breaking. support@garyan2.net

The fix is sent your way and will be in the next release for v1.7.1.12.

Thank you!
