Does "Get Latest Guide Listings" Still Work?

#1

Post by n4mwd » Fri Jan 03, 2020 12:27 am

Does this feature under SETTiNGS -> TV -> GUIDE still force an update of the guide listings?

Is it safe to use?

No, It does nothing (It is safe to try but it only worked when using the MS/Rovi guide) If you are using EPG123 it has no effect.

If you aren’t switching to EPG123 or an alternative provider/DVR you are on borrowed time.

My current guide goes til Jan14 at 4:30 pm MT (Comcast Cable). It was down after Dec 31 like many people.

According to Wikipedia:
When support for Windows 7 ends[26] on January 14, 2020, EPG data no longer be available for download from Microsoft

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Windows_Media_Center

The Microsoft link says starting in January 2020 so I would expect that you will lose the guide again.

Starting in January 2020, Microsoft is retiring its Electronic Program Guide (EPG) service for all versions of Windows Media Center. To continue receiving TV Program Guide information on your Windows Media Center, you’ll need to configure an alternate TV listing provider.

https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/window ... age-center

If guide data is important to you I’d recommend switching to EPG123, or an alternative guide and not hold out until it dies again.

It is a mystery why it came back. The guide says Portion of content provided by Roku.

Hopefully they will take the relay.

Hey, the windows media center guide is working now or at least on my computer it is. I HOPE that means they decided to continue it?

They never said when it was going to cease, just sometime in January. I believe the earlier stoppage was unintentional. I'm sure the guide will still be stopping at some point.

Seems Win8 WMC won't retire the Guide until 2023. I wonder if it's possible to modify WMC13 to mimic Windows 8.

Why do you think this? Was there an announcement from Microsoft?

I have windows 7 and windows 10 both running windows media center. Today we tried them and the guide is downloading! Try it, I think someone decided to turn back on the normal EPG! Let me know if it works for you as well!

While in searching EPG123, someone noted their guide was back. I checked mine and VOILA! Good through Jan. 21 @ 2 AM. Will the guide go beyond Jan 21st? Time will tell ... Go check your guide & see what you have.

I bet MS doesn't have anyone who remembers how to turn the WMC guide system off anymore. :)

I'm sure Microsoft remembers that they pay money to Rovi for EPG data that they don't have to after Jan. I would advise against continuing to rearrange the deck chairs on the Titanic. :D

Did they kill off the guide on the Xbox one ? That was based off the same thing....

To update the answer to the OP's question, yes the guide update is working again and there is no issue doing so. Current listings go to 1/24/20.

Yes indeed.

Based on past experience, any number of things could happen, but most likely MS stops paying the bill and Rovi flips the switch off. I think the only question is when it happens.

It appears now that last week's outage was just standard operating procedure.
