Good video card for Comcast DRM/H.264 issues

#1

Post by artm » Sun Feb 09, 2020 6:11 pm

I thought I'd start a thread on this, as there are many of us experiencing issues. Some of us have noted which video cards do not work. Please reply ONLY if you are experiencing NO issues with your Comcast, WMC setup. That means you have:

1. Fluid playback, fast forward, etc of recorded material. No stuttering, pausing.
2. No issue with switching between DRM channels and non-DRM.

Please provide complete details of your video card.

Rickt1962: To be clear, you're using Comcast and do not have the issues noted above?

This reply from another user of this card says the opposite:

@Rick1962: can you share your GT730 brand/model?
@artm: I just noticed that you are using HDHomerun and I do Ceton. Yet we both have the same issue.

Do you recall whether it was a MSI, Asus, Zotak, EVGA, Gigabyte,.. Nvidia OEM brand. Probably doesn't matter but who knows....

I got the 730 and it appears the skip issue is gone. However, I need to do some more testing before confirming

Record from non-encrypted and encrypted channels to confirm. I recall having less of a skip issue with ESPN, MSNBC (?) than SOME other channels.

Also try going from an 800's (non-encrypted) channel to a 200's (both encrypted and not). See if you have video or just audio.

Finally, tell us specifically which card you have, firmwre version, what system you're using, etc..

I have a GT 730 and have had the problems since Comcast switched. It's not just a matter of using one graphics card or another.

Well, it may be simple...if people tell us EXACTLY which GT730 they use!

Come on now!

Specify the manufacturer, model, OS and driver used.

I got the ZOTAC GeForce GT 730 Zone Edition 4GB DDR3 PCI Express 2.0 x16 (x8 lanes) Graphics Card (ZT-71115-20L)
Just downloaded the latest drivers from nvidia. I have a Win 7 setup (with Ceton on Comcast)
This card appeared to have fixed my issues.

...and what exactly were your issues? Did you confirm the switching issue that I noted above?

i never experienced a switching issue. Then again I never switched much. I watch 95% recorded. My issue was the skip forward hangup.

Can you switch between a 800-range non-encrypted to a 200-range encrypted to confirm? I have a Zotac GT710 which does have the issues.

The graphics card manufacturer does not matter. The NVIDIA software is all the same. Updating it has not made one iota of difference. Either you have a PC that works, and I have found some people that believe their PC does, or not.

I believe the issue is some combination of how the gpu and/or cpu and/or motherboard interact together. In researching this over years since Comcast switched, I've found too many variables to pin it to one thing.

What you should do is start a topic asking for complete PC's that work with Comcast.

The gt730 is significantly faster better card than a 710 which is like crap in comparison. The higher up the 2nd digit the better they get.
