Recording Prohibited

Hi Gary, I installed EPG123 last week, and it seemed to go fairly smoothly. But now I've been getting this weird error that's preventing me from recording that I never had before.

The error is "Recording of this content is prohibited by the content provider" and it happens on random channels with random shows. I scanned through my in WMC and the error has never shown up before.

My cable service is with Verizon, and I doubt they changed something this week. My HTPC is a four tuner Ceton card that's inside the PC with the CableCard.

Have you seen this happen before? Do you have any idea what could be causing this?

The prohibition flag was in the data stream that came into WMC, and has nothing to do with the guide. Mods, can you please move this to an appropriate area.

Reasons this may have happened:

a) Verizon changed something

b) something went wrong with your cableCARD setup

Every broadcast has a CCI flag set by your provider. The flag determines if you are allowed to record the show and if so, what you can do with the show after the show is recorded.

My guess is that the flag is set incorrectly by Verizon. You can view the flag by tuning to a channel, then going to the diagnostic page of the tuner http://192.168.200.1. I am not sure exactly where the flag info is, but it is in there.

Could this be the old problem with the CGMS-A copy protection? If there was no CCI on the channel and there is CGMS-A (analog copy protection) older version of the firmware for both Ceton and SiliconDust would see it as either copy-once or copy-never (what you are probably seeing).
Considering that this is a standard definition channel, it may not have CCI (I checked my FiOS system and none of the SD channels I checked had CCI).

What version of firmware are you running on your Ceton? If you haven't seen this before, you might have had the version that ignores CGMS-A, but somehow ended up installing older firmware while installing EPG123 (perhaps you had issues and troubleshooting involved firmware changes?)

Here is a thread mentioning the firmware that ignores CGMS-A, I don't know much about Ceton, so you should get more opinions from others that know more about it:

Also, WMC has a bug that if one channel is blocked due to CGMS-A, it can affect other channel as well, even if they don't have that set:
