My Media Center Remote is not working

Hello. I have set up the My Media Center software. From my notebook, I can start a TV show that was previously recorded, but I can't used the remote in My Media Center to pause, rewind, pull up the guide, switch to TV, etc. I have checked and rechecked the installation, and I can't find anything. What am I doing wrong?

What notebook and remote are you using? Did the remote for WMC come with the notebook or is it an aftermarket purchase?
