New Receiver with 4k Upscaling

#1

Post by joeer77 » Wed Jun 03, 2020 5:56 pm

My 10 year old Sony receiver is on it's last legs. I see the new receivers include 4k upscaling. I plan to keep my Windows 7 HTPC resolution at 1080p and have new receiver upscale to 4k. Does anyone have experience with this? Any issues I can expect? Thanks in advance.

TVs normally do the best job of upscaling as the tech has been refined for the specific display.

Yes. Set the new A/V receiver to pass through and let your 4K set do the work.

Some Green Button WMC users run 4K from the PC, which can have a few minor issues. See the dedicated topic in this forum.

Ok thanks for responses. I will leave up scaling to the TV.

Be aware that a lot of receivers can only pass thru HDMI 4K @30hz from the PC.
Newer receivers can probably pass thru the full 4K @ 60hz.
However, the problem I've encountered when running the HTPC via the HDMI on the receiver is the audio sync.
There tends to be a slight lag with the audio, with results in lip sync issues.

So, I run the HDMI from the HTPC directly to the TV and then run a separate audio cable (optical) from the HTPC to the receiver.
