I just wanted to say I love my WHS :D
Not sure about upgrading to V2 though, could be expensive needing all new matched drives for hardware raid and I'd want to build a completely new rig.
Who's already taken the jump to WHS 2011 ? And how did you find the transition ?

Think I need to start building a new server soon, can anyone recommend a cheap rack mount server case that is decent.

Norco rpc-4224 (24 drive hotswap, no internal, no optical space)

Hi all,
I've been trying to get an Xbox360 set up as an extender for MCE. Unfortunately the only support from Microsoft is for Vista/7 and I've reverted to MCE2005 as it causes me fewer problems.
Does anyone have the software for MCE2005 to Xbox360 archived anywhere on their systems? I'm getting...

Thanks guys.
I don't have the £100 for Windows 7 and the machine wouldn't run it anyway. Besides, I much prefer the .dvr-ms to the .wtv files.
As for the MCE2005 being supported, the trouble is when you click the link it takes you to (rather than the or ) - this simply takes you to an upgrade page...

I had the bright idea to install WHS using VirtualBox having never used either. After some playing around I finally got WHS to install but unfortunately it won't recognize the NIC. I've tried manually installing the driver but it keeps saying that the NIC failed to start. Any ideas?

Virtual PC is 32-bit - and won't support WHS 2011.
I installed Windows Server 2008 R2 and then put WHS 2011 into a Hyper-V machine. I also had a WHS V1 machine that I converted to Hyper-V and can still boot up my old WHS V1 server, if I need to get access to any of those backups. And I'm running a...

I want to use XBOX extenders in several rooms and have a central Windows 7 computer with Media Center 7 as the command and control computer. I know if I just used the Windows 7 computer as the main server/storage area then everything would use Media Center as the GUI and all would be good.

Sounds like your talking about playing files from a remote network share (Pull) and not streaming (push)

If YAC still isn't responding I would try using hyperterminal and see exactly what the modem is outputting. The AT+VCID=1 is the most important command for getting caller ID working. I took some screen shots to getting Hyperterminal setup to test your modem. I have also uploaded a copy of...

A few years back I had a WHS installed and it worked great. I had to let it go because of space limitations in the new place. I have moved again and now have WHS on my network. I used to use WHS Recorded TV manager and it worked great. However, I went to download it and install it again and found...

Thanks everyone, I figured it out. It will work on windows 7, but you have to have a metadata update for the Recorded TV Manager software. It's a free update if you have already purchased the software.
Here is the developers website:
I hope this helps someone else out too.

My main office desktop PC & backup Media Center PC has developed an annoying behavior. It started the weekend I installed WHS 2011 on to the server. But I THINK it installed or updated Windows Live at that time as well. The desktop PC has an EVGA NVIDIA GeForce GTX 460 video card and a Samsung 1920...

Well it's fixed now. For the time being at least. After disconnecting from the internet, I went into the device manager and uninstalled the display deleting the driver files as suggested. Afer a couple of reboots it finally forgot about the 460. Finally reported Standard VGA. Ran a couple of driver...

Modem to Router thru VR/Surge/UPS: good idea, bad idea or do

I'm reconfiguring my rack and cabling this weekend.
Questions:
1.) I'm thinking about running my cat6 from Modem to Router thru the Voltage Regulator/Surge Protector/UPS.
Is this a: good idea, bad idea or it doesn't matter?
(If not a good idea, how about between the router and the switch?)...

As far as switch connectivity it depends on the interface speeds of those devices and their potential to fill up a gigabit link as well as your current port density. If you have the extra ports in the Procurve than run the extra cables. If not just verify the total number of devices and the amount...

Hi,
just curious to see if anyone has any ideas on how to speed up the allocation of ip addresses.
On my setup, the router is the dhcp provider, this is connected by 100 mbit connection to a gigabit switch, which is then connected to our main house gigabit switch, and most of the pcs etc connect...

Thanks guys,
once we get our bb connection sorted, I'll go back to manually assigned ip addresses, and see if that helps, if not, I'll go for the network analysis to see if any bottlenecks are on my network.
Thanks

Windows Live Mesh works well with Windows 7 Home Premium (free download from MS) with one caveat. You can't operate a remote PC that's in Media Center full screen. As far as I know, you need to take the remote PC out of full screen (or close MC with a remote control first) then connect.
Other than...

Start with the basics. Make sure you have current drivers on both the machines for thier respective NIC cards. Connect the 2 machines via a crossover cable. Check the transfer speeds. If all checks out ok add the switch into the picture. If speeds are still slow start looking at flow control or...

Hey all--
Question-- how are people getting around setting up WHS2011 Remote Access when ISPs blocking port 80?
I'm considering getting a DynDNS Account with CustomDNS to use their WebHop feature to hop (a DynDNS domain name I will have) during the WHS2011 Remote Setup (where it's asking for my...

Maybe the wizard is actually trying to contact the domain on 80 when verifying and since it can not it sends you to Go Daddy assuming that domain is dead.

Is there any benefit or downside (aside from monetary) to buying a cable modem? I noticed Comcrap is charging $7 a month now to lease. Modems aren't that expensive.

Another suggestion: Surge Protection!
Everything is backed by UPS electrically so no issues there. I put some suppression on the incoming line last night. We'll see how well it works.
